Iterative Parallel-Trellis MAP Equalizers with Nonuniformly-Spaced Prefilters for Sparse Multipath Channels

چکیده
A maximum a posteriori (MAP) equalizer is derived in this paper by formulating the forward/backward recursion MAP algorithm (i.e. the BCJR algorithm) on a paralleltrellis representation that was previously proposed for equalizing sparse multipath channels. Several enhancements are suggested to further improve the performance and/or reduce the complexity of the resultant MAP equalizer. Results show that the paralleltrellis MAP equalizers utilizing 2-state trellises are the predominant structures applicable to minimum-phase sparse multipath channels when binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation is assumed. However, for nonminimum-phase sparse multipath channels, prefilterng is generally indispensable and is accomplished using the feedforward filter (FFF) of a nonuniformly-spaced decision feedback equalizer (NU-DFE) optimized under the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion, which also preserves the sparseness of the resultant minimum-phase impulse response. The simplicity of the 2-state, parallel-trellis structure leads to a low computational load that is comparable to those of uniformlyspaced and nonuniformly-spaced tapped-delay-line (TDL) equalizers, but attains much superior performance over the latter types of equalizers. Moreover, iterations can be added to improve the accuracy of the inter-trellis intersymbol interference (ISI) estimates and the residual ISI estimates due to channel truncation, and are especially effective in mitigating the precursor ISI terms due to non-ideal prefiltering.

Sparse multipath channels are wireless links commonly found in communication systems such asterrestrial broadcasting, underwater acoustic and cellular land mobile. Their impulse responses arecharacterized by a few significant multipath terms that are widely separated in time. With highspeed transmission, the length of a sampled sparse channel can reach hundreds of symbol intervals,<...

Abstract— We propose a spectrum efficient and robust space-timefrequency code system for a MIMO, -tap fading channel. The LDPC code is employed at the transmitter and iterative maximum a posteriori (MAP) equalizers are used at the receiver. We propose a novel, reducedcomplexity iterative decoding and equalization scheme in which we combine the message-passing decoder, on the Bipartite graph for...

This thesis deals with the problem of combining equalization with decoding for high data ratebandwidth-efficient transmissions over frequency-selective channels. Specifically, we focus on Turbo-Equalization which establishes an exchange of soft information between the equalizer and the decoderin an iterative manner. We first consider MAP turbo-equalizers which rely on trellis-based ...

The technique is applicable to any standard modulation technique. The MAP equalizer uses an expanded hypothesis trellis for the purpose of joint channel estimation and equalization. The fading channel is estimated by coupling minimum mean square erro...
